Michael Carrick experienced his first loss as Manchester United’s interim manager on Monday night, as his side fell to a 2-1 defeat against Newcastle United at a lively St James’ Park.
The result brings a swift end to the perfect start Carrick had enjoyed since taking over, following wins against Villarreal and Arsenal in his first spell.
Despite the setback, United remain third in the Premier League table, though they are now level on points with Aston Villa, who were beaten heavily by Chelsea.
It was a night to forget for the visitors, who struggled to find their rhythm against a determined Newcastle side. Carrick was honest in his assessment of the performance, admitting his team were second best for large parts of the game.
“We weren’t there in terms of quality,” Carrick said after the match. “Credit to Newcastle. They deserved to win tonight. It hurts me to say that, but that’s how it was.”
The match turned on its head in the second half. After a tight opening 45 minutes, the home side took control. While the dismissal of a United player for a second yellow card proved a talking point, Carrick refused to use it as an excuse for the defeat.
“I don’t think it was the ten men,” he explained. “I just don’t think we played good enough tonight. We can’t make any excuses for that. We knew it would be difficult, but it was a match we could have won. We are deeply disappointed.”
When questioned about whether the team lacked fight after going down to ten men, the interim boss was quick to defend his players’ commitment. He insisted the issue was purely down to their performance levels, not their attitude.
“Why was the character lacking? It wasn’t. It was just the quality and the performance. Not the character. We wanted to win. It’s easy to throw that out when you don’t win a game of football.”
The defeat serves as a reality check for United, who had been flying high under their new management team. However, Carrick was keen to keep the result in perspective, reminding everyone that the club remains in a strong position in the league.
“We’ve lost one game, we haven’t played well enough, but in the grand scheme of things, we are in a good position. We’re not happy with the way we played tonight. We’re bitterly disappointed. We need to get back to working and be better for the next game.”
With the race for a top-four finish tighter than ever, United will be looking to bounce back quickly. The focus now shifts to the next fixture as Carrick and his squad look to put this disappointing night on Tyneside behind them.
