Michael Essien Chooses Iconic Strike Against Arsenal as His Favorite Chelsea Goal
Former Ghanaian midfielder Michael Essien has revealed that his stunning goal against Arsenal in 2006 is his favorite strike during his time at Chelsea.
Despite scoring several memorable goals, including a thunderous volley against Barcelona in the 2008-2009 UEFA Champions League semi-finals, Essien ranks the Arsenal strike above all.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Multimedia Group’s Fentuo Tahiru, Essien explained the significance of that particular goal. “I score goals when the team needs one,” he said.
“The strike against Arsenal is my favorite considering the fact that we were losing and also our home invincibility was at stake. Scoring a goal like that is special for me.”
The midfielder’s equalizer in the dying moments of the game helped Chelsea maintain their unbeaten home record under then-manager Jose Mourinho.
Essien’s curling shot from outside the box remains one of the most iconic goals in Premier League history.
While his strike against Barcelona in 2008 is celebrated for its technical brilliance, Essien’s preference for the Arsenal goal highlights its emotional and tactical importance in Chelsea’s campaign that season.
