Former Ghanaian midfielder and Chelsea legend Michael Essien has revealed that he was approached to take up the role of assistant coach for the Black Stars but declined, stating that he did not feel ready for the responsibility.
In an interview on SportyDrive on Sporty FM, Essien disclosed that he had discussions with Otto Addo, the current Black Stars coach, and Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku regarding the role. However, he ultimately decided against accepting the offer.
I was approached to be the Black Stars assistant coach. I spoke with Otto Addo and President Kurt Okraku, but I felt I wasn’t ready. Essien stated.
The former midfielder, known for his illustrious playing career with Chelsea, Real Madrid, and AC Milan, has been involved in coaching since retiring from professional football. He currently serves as a coaching staff member at Danish club FC Nordsjælland, where he is gaining experience in the technical aspects of the game.
His decision to turn down the Black Stars role suggests that he is keen on further developing his coaching skills before taking on a high-profile position with the national team.
The Black Stars, under Otto Addo, continue their preparations for upcoming international competitions, with GFA officials constantly working to strengthen the team’s technical staff.
