Former Black Stars midfielder, Michael Essien, has expressed his disappointment over Ghana’s failure to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Speaking on Sporty Drive on Sporty FM, the football legend admitted that missing out on the tournament was painful but maintained that it was better than merely participating without making an impact.
I was disappointed Ghana didn’t qualify for the AFCON, but it is better not to qualify than to just add up to the numbers. Essien stated. emphasizing the need for the team to be competitive rather than just present.
Despite the setback, the former Chelsea star remains optimistic about Ghana’s football future. In another statement, Essien expressed confidence that the Black Stars would soon end their trophy drought.
I believe Ghana will win a trophy soon, he affirmed, signaling hope for the nation’s football fans.
Ghana, a four-time AFCON champion, has faced challenges in recent years, struggling to reclaim its former glory on the continental stage.
The last time the Black Stars of Ghana won a major trophy was the African cup of Nations in 1982.
