The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has taken a key step in preparing for a major international sports event by officially forming the Local Organizing Committee for the upcoming T20 Cricket Tournament.

The inauguration ceremony took place on Monday, February 16, 2026, signaling the start of serious preparations for the event scheduled for March 2026.

The tournament is expected to bring several benefits to the country, including promoting the sport of cricket, giving a boost to local tourism, and encouraging community involvement.

Speaking at the ceremony, the sector Minister, Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, explained why the event is important for the country’s sporting goals. “Today’s inauguration signifies yet another key step in Ghana’s ongoing efforts to develop, promote, and leverage sports as a powerful tool for national progress and international engagement,” she stated.

The Minister also pointed to Ghana’s past success in hosting large-scale events, such as the 13th African Games, as proof that the nation is ready for this challenge. She noted that the country has shown it can organize world-class sports competitions while also sharing its culture and hospitality with visitors.

The new Local Organizing Committee is designed to bring together different groups to work towards a common goal. By including government agencies, local communities, and private companies, the aim is to create a team effort to make the tournament a success.

The committee will focus on motivating players, officials, and volunteers, and will use careful planning to ensure everything runs smoothly.

Mr. Nii Okai Evans Anfom, who will chair the board of the Local Organizing Committee, thanked the Minister for the trust placed in him and his team. “We are committed to working vigorously with all stakeholders to deliver a world-class tournament that will be remembered for its professionalism and excellence,” he assured.

The tournament in March will see six teams compete at a high level. Adding to the importance of the event, it will also serve as a qualifying round, with the top two teams earning a place in a larger international competition.

This raises the stakes and places a greater responsibility on Ghana to provide an excellent experience for everyone involved—from the athletes and officials to the spectators.

The seven members appointed to the LOC board are:

Mr. Nii Okai Evans Anfom

Mr. Nihal Abbas

Mr. Erasmus Douglas Djarbeng

Madam Evelyn Amerley Nuno-Amarteifio

Mr. Horen Quarshigah

Mr. Samuel Ayer

Madam Gifty Fianu

With the formation of this committee, Ghana has officially begun its preparations to welcome the world for the T20 Cricket Tournament in 2026.

This move is seen as another step forward in building the nation’s reputation as a reliable and capable host for international sporting excellence.
