The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has officially announced a change in leadership for the Atlas Lions of Morocco. The Federation confirmed the departure of head coach Walid Regragui, the architect of the team’s historic run to the World Cup semi-finals, and simultaneously unveiled his successor, U-20 World Cup-winning coach Mohamed Ouahbi.

The announcement, marks the end of a transformative era and the beginning of a new chapter for the Atlas Lions.

The FRMF released a statement acknowledging the immense contribution of Walid Regragui, whose contract has come to an end.

Regragui leaves behind a legacy that has forever altered the perception of Moroccan and African football.

Appointed in 2022, Regragui’s tenure was nothing short of remarkable. He took charge of the team just months before the FIFA World Cup in Qatar and proceeded to orchestrate the most successful campaign by an African country in the tournament’s history.

Under his guidance, Morocco became the first African and Arab team to reach the World Cup semi-finals, defeating footballing giants Belgium, Spain, and Portugal along the way.

A New Era Begins: Mohamed Ouahbi Appointed Head Coach

Moving swiftly to fill the void, the FRMF has placed its trust in a familiar figure within its youth development structure. Mohamed Ouahbi has been appointed as the new head coach of the Atlas Lions of Morocco.

Ouahbi, who has earned his credentials on the international stage, steps up from the youth ranks where he achieved a huge success. He is best known for guiding Morocco’s U-20 team to the finals of the U-20 Cup of Nations and subsequently leading them to win FIFA U-20 World Cup against Argentina.

This pedigree in developing and leading young talent aligns with the Federation’s long-term vision for the national team.

To support Ouahbi in this new and demanding role, the FRMF has secured an experienced assistant. The 37-year-old Portuguese coach João Sacramento will serve as Ouahbi’s assistant.
