The latest FIFA World Rankings have been released for April, revealing a period of stability at the top of the African zone while highlighting a concerning decline for Ghana’s Black Stars.
Morocco continues to fly the flag for African football, holding firm as the continent’s highest-ranked country. The Atlas Lions remain unmoved at 8th place globally, solidifying their status as a force on the international stage following impressive performances.
Behind them, the hierarchy of African football’s elite sees subtle shifts. Senegal, despite a slight dip of two places to 14th, retains the second spot on the continent. Nigeria and Algeria are locked in their positions at 26th and 28th respectively, while Egypt has gained ground, climbing two places to 29th following a positive run of form.
Further down the top ten, there is notable upward movement. Ivory Coast have risen three places to 34th, while Tunisia also enjoyed a three-place ascent to 44th. Cameroon remains static at 45th, with DR Congo and Mali each climbing two places to 46th and 52nd, respectively.
Black Stars’ Decline
However, the narrative for one of Africa’s Giant is on regression. Ghana’s Black Stars have fallen two places to 74th in the global rankings.
While the team remains positioned at 14th within the Confederation of African Football (CAF) , the continued downward trajectory in the global standings will be a source of concern for the Ghana Football Association. The latest figures reflect the team’s struggles to maintain consistency against both continental and international opposition.
The April rankings serve as the latest benchmark for national teams as they prepare for the 2026 World Cup, with momentum at this stage of the season considered crucial for those aiming to compete on the biggest stages.
