A new Governing Board for the National Sports Authority (NSA) has been officially inaugurated, with Dr. Fred Awaah appointed as its Chairman. The ceremony was performed by the Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, who charged the board to deliver transformative reforms for the sector.

The inauguration follows the Cabinet’s approval of the nominees, as required by Section 4 of Act 934. This act establishes the Board to oversee the NSA’s operations and ensure greater efficiency.

In his address after the swearing in, Dr. Fred Awaah shared an ambitious vision for his tenure. He stressed the board’s commitment to shifting sports from being viewed primarily as social entertainment to a powerful engine for national economic progress.

“We will work effectively to move sports from a social entertainment enterprise to one that directly contributes to national economic development,” Dr. Awaah stated. He highlighted that strategic reforms are essential to unlocking the sector’s full potential for creating jobs, generating revenue, and developing infrastructure.

The appointment of this new board marks a renewed effort by President Mahama’s Administration to build a more competitive, inclusive, and sustainable sports sector in Ghana.

The new chairman also pledged equal attention to all sports disciplines and committed to forging partnerships with local and international investors to develop human resources, expand infrastructure across Ghana’s regions, enhance ethics and integrity, and align the sector with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the Sustainable Development Goals.

The(15) fifteen member board is chaired by Dr. Fred Awaah, with the Director General of the NSA, Mr. Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, serving as a key member.

Dr. Fred Awaah is a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Management Studies, University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA). An accomplished academic, his work includes authoring a book, over twenty-five peer-reviewed journal articles, six book chapters, and numerous technical reports and conference papers. He is also a prolific writer, with over 80 newspaper articles to his credit, and is known for his active participation in international conferences and collaborative research across Africa.

Before his career in academia, Dr. Awaah served as the Secretary General of the All-Africa Students Union, where he led several progressive initiatives for the organization.

The board’s inauguration signals a new chapter for Ghanaian sports, focusing on strategic growth and tangible national development.
