The Minister for Youth and Sports, Kofi Adams, has officially sworn in a new fifteen member Board of Directors for the National Sports Authority (NSA). Chaired by Dr. Fred Awaah, the board’s inauguration marks a pivotal move by the government to professionalize sports administration and harness the sector’s full socioeconomic potential.
The newly sworn-in board comprises a blend of seasoned administrators, sports veterans, and development experts. Key members include the NSA Director General, Mr. Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, alongside Bawa Fuseini, Samuel Duku Sarfo, Nana Adwoa Owusu-Amoh, Is-Haku Al-Hassan, Dr. Luguterah Austin Wontepaga, Samson Deen, and Richard Akpokavie.
In his inaugural address, Chairman Dr. Fred Awaah laid out a transformative agenda for the board. “Our mandate is clear: to transition sports from a realm of social entertainment to a robust enterprise that directly contributes to national economic development,” he stated. Dr. Awaah emphasized strategic reforms aimed at job creation, revenue generation, and sustainable infrastructure growth within the sports ecosystem.
The board’s establishment follows Cabinet approval of the nominees, in accordance with Section 4 of the Sports Act, 2016 (Act 934). This act mandates a Governing Board to oversee the NSA’s operations, ensuring accountability and efficiency.
The inauguration aligns with broader initiatives led by Minister Kofi Adams, which focus on enhancing transparency, securing sustainable funding, and modernizing Ghana’s sports landscape. The board is tasked with critical functions, including the management of national sports facilities, the promotion of mass participation in sports, and providing robust support for Ghanaian athletes competing internationally.

Adding significant depth to the board is Mr. Samson Deen, President of both the African Paralympic Committee and the Ghana Paralympic Committee. Mr. Deen brings a proven track record in sports governance, athlete welfare, and promoting inclusion. Reacting to his reappointment, he reaffirmed his commitment to youth development and ethical leadership.

The newly constituted board is expected to immediately begin work on its strategic roadmap, focusing on leveraging sports as a key driver for national development in the coming years.
