Ghanaian swimmer Nubia Adjei has taken an important step toward realizing her Olympic dream after being awarded an Olympic Scholarship for Athletes ahead of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

The scholarship, secured through the efforts of the Ghana Swimming Association in collaboration with the Ghana Olympic Committee, will run until August 2028. Its continuation is subject to the athlete maintaining discipline and adhering strictly to anti-doping regulations.

The Olympic Scholarship for Athletes programme is designed to provide targeted financial and technical support to athletes from smaller National Olympic Committees. With a strong emphasis on empowering female athletes, the initiative aims to enhance training quality and increase exposure to high-level international competitions, thereby improving qualification prospects for the Olympic Games.

To remain eligible, beneficiaries must compete in individual sports featured on the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic programme and demonstrate a high level of technical competence, supported by credible performances in recognized international competitions. Athletes must also show limited access to alternative funding sources, ensuring that the scholarship delivers meaningful impact, while maintaining compliance with the Olympic Charter, International Olympic Committee (IOC), and Ghana Olympic Committee standards.

Adjei’s selection comes as little surprise given her steady rise within Ghana’s swimming ranks. Having been a key member of the national team for over five years, she has consistently established herself as one of the country’s leading performers in the pool.

Her impressive trajectory was further highlighted at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore, where she delivered a standout performance by breaking Ghana’s national record in the women’s 50m butterfly event.

On the Global stage, Adjei has also distinguished herself, securing multiple medals for Ghana at major competitions. Notably, she delivered strong performances at the 2025 Africa Aquatics Zone 2 Championships held in Accra, further cementing her status as one of Ghana’s brightest swimming prospects.

With the backing of the Olympic Scholarship and her continued dedication to excellence, Nubia Adjei now stands well-positioned to intensify her preparations as she sets her sights firmly on qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
