A delegation from the Retired Footballers Association of Ghana has called on the government to strengthen its support for the country’s football legends.
The team, led by the association’s President, Mr. James Kuuku Dadzie, paid a courtesy visit to the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Adams, on Wednesday, February 25, 2026. The meeting was held at the ministry’s conference room in Accra.

The retired players were warmly received by the Minister and his team. The Chief Director of the Ministry, Mrs. Wilhelmina Asamoah, officially welcomed the visitors and expressed hope for a strong working relationship.
During the meeting, Mr. Dadzie spoke about the need for a solid partnership between the government and former footballers. He stressed the importance of giving these sportsmen the recognition they deserve for their contribution to the country. He reminded those present of Ghana’s rich football history, pointing to the African Cup of Nations victories in 1963, 1965, 1978, and 1982, which established Ghana as a major force in African football.

In his response, Hon. Kofi Adams praised the footballers for their role in building the country’s sporting legacy. He thanked the association for their visit and assured them the government is committed to improving the welfare of retired athletes.
The Minister spoke about current plans to create better opportunities for footballers after their playing days are over. This includes providing health support and working towards the creation of a special Sports Fund.
He explained that this fund would not only support current sports development but also look after the well-being of retired players.

Hon. Adams also revealed plans to organize events each year to honor the contributions of former footballers. He said their efforts are the foundation of Ghana’s strong position in African football today.
“The strength of a family is how well it is connected to the old,” the Minister said. He urged the association to work closely with the Ministry to find lasting ways to honor the past while also motivating young players for the future.
The members of the delegation expressed their thanks for the warm reception and said they are eager to work with the government.
Other notable former footballers at the meeting included Mr. Willie Kluste, Rev. Osei Kofi, Rev. Kofi Pare, Mr. Mohammed Polo, Mr. Abdul Razak, and Mr. George Alhassan.

This visit is seen as an important move to ensure that Ghana’s football heroes are celebrated and cared for, protecting their legacy for years to come.
