Cristiano Ronaldo has been reminded that “no individual determines decisions beyond their own club” following his recent absence from the Al-Nassr squad in an apparent protest.
The 41-year-old football star did not feature in Al-Nassr’s 1-0 victory over Al-Riyadh on Monday. Reports indicate his absence was a form of strike, stemming from frustration over the club’s limited activity in the recent transfer window compared to their Saudi Pro League rivals.
Manager Jorge Jesus had reportedly asked for more signings, but the club’s only acquisition was 21-year-old Haydeer Abdulkareem. Meanwhile, other top clubs, like Al-Hilal, made several high-profile signings, including former Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema.
In response to the situation, the Saudi Pro League issued a statement clarifying its structure. It emphasized that each club operates independently under the same financial rules.

“The Saudi Pro League is structured around a simple principle: every club operates independently under the same rules.
“Clubs have their own boards, their own executives and their own football leadership. Decisions on recruitment, spending and strategy sit with those clubs, within a financial framework designed to ensure sustainability and competitive balance. That framework applies equally across the league.
“Cristiano has been fully engaged with Al Nassr since his arrival and has played an important role in the club’s growth and ambition. Like any elite competitor, he wants to win. But no individual – however significant – determines decisions beyond their own club.
“Recent transfer activity demonstrates that independence clearly. One club strengthened in a particular way. Another chose a different approach. Those were club decisions, taken within approved financial parameters.
“The competitiveness of the league speaks for itself. With only a few points separating the top four, the title race is very much alive. That level of balance reflects a system that is working as intended.
“The focus remains on football – on the pitch, where it belongs – and on maintaining a credible, competitive competition for players and fans.” according to the Daily Mail
Ronaldo is expected to return to training on Friday, and club officials are confident he will end his protest and be available for their next match against Al-Ittihad. The club is said to be surprised by his unhappiness but hopeful for his return, especially given his exceptional scoring form this season.
