In an explosive reaction to the Confederation of African Football’s bombshell decision to strip Senegal of their Africa Cup of Nations title, captain Sadio Mane has launched a fierce indictment of the continent’s football governance, declaring that “corruption” is destroying the sport .

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) Appeal Board ruled on Tuesday that Senegal had forfeited the final of the 2025 AFCON, awarding a 3-0 walkover victory to Morocco and handing the Atlas Lions their first continental title since 1976 . The decision overturned Senegal’s hard-fought 1-0 extra-time victory in Rabat on January 18, a match overshadowed by dramatic scenes when Senegalese players briefly walked off the pitch in protest during stoppage time .

‘What happened has gone too far’

Taking to Instagram on Tuesday night, the former Liverpool forward did not mince words as he expressed his profound disillusionment with the continent’s football governing body .

“What happened has gone too far. This is not the football we fight for, not the Africa we believe in,” Mane wrote . “There is too much corruption in our game, and it’s killing the passion of millions of fans across the continent.”

The 33-year-old captain emphasized that his disappointment extends far beyond Senegal’s borders, framing the ruling as an attack on African football’s integrity as a whole .

“The players give everything on the pitch, but decisions off it are deciding matches and trophies,” he continued. “I am deeply disappointed not only for Senegal, but for African football as a whole. We deserve better. The fans deserve fairness, transparency, and respect” .

The controversial final

The original final in Rabat descended into chaos during stoppage time when Moroccan forward Brahim Díaz was awarded a controversial penalty following a VAR review.

Senegal’s players, supported by coaching staff, left the field in protest for approximately 15 minutes .

Notably, Mane remained on the pitch and persuaded his teammates to return, later explaining his rationale, “I’d rather lose than this kind of thing happen to our football. Football should not stop for even ten minutes but what can we do? We have to accept, the good thing is that we came back and we played the game” .

Díaz ultimately missed the penalty, attempting a ill-fated Panenka, and Senegal secured victory in extra time . After the match, Mane described the triumph as “the best trophy of my life,” surpassing even his Champions League success with Liverpool .

CAF’s ruling

CAF’s Appeal Board determined that Senegal’s walk-off violated Articles 82 and 84 of the AFCON regulations, which govern refusal to play or unauthorized departure from the field of play .

The governing body upheld an appeal lodged by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, setting aside the original match result.

“The appeal lodged by the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF) is declared admissible in form and the appeal is upheld,” CAF stated. “In application of Article 84 of the Regulations of the Africa Cup of Nations, the Senegal team is declared to have forfeited the match, with the result recorded as 3–0 in favour of the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF)”

Widespread condemnation

The Senegalese Football Federation has denounced the decision as “unfair, unprecedented and unacceptable,” vowing to file an appeal before the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Mane’s teammates joined the captain in expressing their defiance through social media. Defender Moussa Niakhate posted a daring challenge on Instagram, telling CAF to “come and take my medal” . Fellow players Habib Diarra and Pathe Ciss shared celebratory images with the trophy, accompanied by laughing emojis and declarations that they remain the “2025 champions of Africa” .

Pathe Ciss was particularly scathing, posting a video of the victory celebration with the caption: “They could have given three more goals to those crybabies” . Pape Demba Diop bluntly remarked: “I think we’re in a mental asylum” .

Morocco’s response

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation released a statement expressing respect for CAF’s decision while attempting to strike a conciliatory tone.

“The Federation wishes to recall that its approach has never been intended to challenge the sporting performance of the teams participating in this competition, but solely to request the application of the competition’s regulations,” the statement read .

Morocco’s federation added that it “reaffirms its commitment to respecting the rules, ensuring clarity in the competitive framework, and maintaining stability within African competitions” .

FIFA President Gianni Infantino had previously condemned the behavior of Senegal’s players and staff immediately after the final, stating: “It is unacceptable to leave the field of play in this manner… We must always respect the decisions taken by the match officials on and off the field of play” .

However, Mane’s post-match comments now carry a tragic irony. After persuading his teammates to return to the field, he had expressed satisfaction with the outcome: “Personally, I don’t think it was a penalty, but if the referee decides, you have to respect it… In the end, we were rewarded” .

That reward has now been rescinded, and with it, one of Senegalese football’s proudest achievements has been erased from the official record. As the Senegalese Football Federation prepares its appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, Mane’s words serve as both a passionate defense of his team’s integrity and a damning critique of the institution that stripped them of their glory .
