Dr Prince Pambo, head of the Black Stars medical team, has visited defender Mohammed Salisu in Monaco to check on his recovery from a serious knee injury.

The Black stars defender suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury to his left knee in January during a Ligue 1 match for AS Monaco against Olympique Lyonnais. He has since undergone surgery and started his rehabilitation.

Dr Pambo travelled to France to show support for the player and assess his progress. Salisu has been doing gym work in recent days and is showing early signs of improvement.

The former Southampton defender is expected to be out for between four and six months. That means he could still be available for the World Cup, which starts on June 11 in North America.

Salisu has become an important player for Ghana. He played in seven World Cup qualifiers and scored two goals to help the country secure its place at the tournament in Canada, Mexico and the United States.

Before his injury, he was a regular starter for Monaco and impressed in this season’s Champions League.

Salisu made his Ghana debut in September 2022 as a second-half substitute in a friendly defeat to Brazil. He scored his first goal for the Black Stars in a friendly win against Switzerland in November that same year.

During his visit, Dr Pambo is also expected to meet other Ghanaian players in France, including injured midfielder Abu Francis.

Ghana is stepping up preparations for the World Cup. The team will play Panama in their opening Group L match, followed by games against England and Croatia.

Despite the positive signs in Salisu’s recovery, there is still no guarantee he will be fit in time for the tournament. Medical staff will continue to watch his progress closely in the coming months.

The Stars are also scheduled to play Germany and Austria in an international friendly before the World Cup kicks off
