Sunderland Honour Their AFCON Heroes with Special Tribute
Sunderland have paid glowing tribute to their African contingent following their return from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, commissioning special portraits to celebrate the contributions of their players on the continental stage.
The Black Cats were heavily represented at the tournament and, notably, became the English Premier League side most affected by AFCON call-ups, losing six players, more than any other club during the competition. Despite the disruption, Sunderland chose to spotlight pride over inconvenience, honouring their stars for carrying the club’s badge onto one of football’s biggest international platforms.

At the heart of the celebration is Habib Diarra, who played a key role as Senegal lifted the AFCON trophy for just the second time in their history. His triumph with the Teranga Lions crowned a memorable tournament and underlined his growing importance both for club and country.

Bertrand Traoré represented Burkina Faso, whose campaign ended in the round of 16, while Noah Sadiki and Arthur Masuaku of the Democratic Republic of Congo also bowed out at the same stage after defeat to Algeria.

Chemsdine Talbi came agonisingly close to continental glory with Morocco, finishing runners-up after losing the final to Senegal, while Reinildo Mandava, who represented Mozambique, exited in the last 16.
Sunderland have sent a clear message of appreciation, recognising not just success, but commitment, sacrifice, and the honour of representing one’s nation. It was a gesture that reflected the club’s growing global identity and respect for the international journeys of its players.
As the focus now returns to domestic football, Sunderland can take pride in having been strongly represented on Africa’s biggest stage—and in celebrating players who continue to enhance the club’s reputation far beyond the Stadium of Light.
