Ghanaian swimmer Yamin Amankwah Boamah, 12, has delivered a stunning performance at the Vancouver Island Regional (VIR) Championship in Canada. Over the three-day event, held from January 30 to February 1, 2026, the young athlete set ten new Personal Best (PB) times.
The competition took place at the Saanich Commonwealth Place. Yamin, who last year was the youngest competitor at the Africa Aquatics Zone 2 Championships in Ghana, continued to show his rapid growth in the pool.
His remarkable achievements included a major improvement in the 1500 Metres Freestyle, where he set a new PB of 19:53.83. This was over 40 seconds faster than his previous best time. He also recorded new personal bests in nine other events: the 100m Freestyle, 200m Individual Medley, 200m Medley, 400m Medley, 400m Freestyle, 200m Freestyle, 200m Butterfly, and 100m Backstroke.
Yamin is a student at Monterey Middle School. His talent was already evident in 2025 when he won a bronze medal in the 1500m Freestyle at the Africa Aquatics Zone 2 Championships. He also helped the Ghanaian team secure a silver medal in the 4x200m freestyle relay.
This latest success in Canada strengthens Yamin Amankwah Boamah’s reputation as one of Ghana’s most promising young swimmers. His progress marks him as an athlete to watch for the future of Ghanaian swimming on the international stage.
