Senegal National team head coach Pape Thiaw has made a heartfelt appeal to star forward Sadio Mané, following the player’s suggestion that the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) would be his last.
Mané, a key figure in Senegal’s 2021 AFCON triumph and a national icon, hinted at his international tournament retirement ahead of the competition. His decisive performance in Senegal’s recent 1-0 victory over Egypt, however, underscored his enduring value to the team.
Speaking to reporters, Coach Thiaw stressed Mané’s continued importance. “The only thing I know is that we need him, Senegal needs him,” Thiaw stated. “That’s what he showed again against Egypt. Let’s hope we’ll have more years with him.”
Thiaw praised Mané not just for his skill, but for his character and leadership. “A gentleman like Sadio Mané, you don’t find one all the time. We have to make the most of it,” the coach added.
While respecting the player’s initial statement, Thiaw expressed a clear hope for a change of heart, framing his wish around the team’s immediate and future goals. “I hope this won’t be his last final. Because, after that, there are other competitions,” Thiaw said, pointing to upcoming World Cup and the next AFCON cycle.
