Asante Kotoko SC has announced a change in technical leadership ahead of Sunday’s crucial Super Clash against rivals Hearts of Oak at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
The club confirmed the resignation of head coach Karim Zito following a challenging run of results, including the team’s exit from the MTN FA Cup. Zito, who joined the Porcupine Warriors last season, led the club to MTN FA Cup success in 2025 and secured qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup, marking a period of notable domestic achievement despite recent setbacks.
On an interim basis, Assistant Coach Prince Yaw Owusu will take charge for Sunday’s encounter. He will be assisted by Hamza Obeng, who previously served as an assistant at Hearts of Oak during their domestic double-winning campaign under Samuel Boadu. The club has indicated that its long-term technical direction will be announced after the Super Clash.
Amid the transition, speculation has turned to former head coach Maxwell Konadu. A former Kotoko player and two-time coach of the club, Konadu is highly regarded for his past successes. During his first stint, he masterminded Kotoko’s 22nd league title in the 2011–12 season, finishing an impressive 14 points ahead of Ashanti Gold. That campaign also saw him set a record, still unbroken for the highest points total (63) in the Ghana Premier League since the 2007/08 season.
Konadu also boasts a perfect managerial record against Hearts of Oak, having won all six matches he oversaw in the rivalry. In addition to the league title, he guided Kotoko to President’s Cup success in 2019 during his second spell with the club.
Maxwell served as an assistant coach with the Black Stars, Konadu remains a prominent name linked to the vacant role. His record against Kotoko’s arch-rivals and his legacy of delivering silverware have fueled strong sentiment regarding a potential return.
As Kotoko prepare for Sunday’s Super clash, attention now focuses not only on the outcome of the match but also on the club’s next move in shaping its technical future.
