The Angelo State University track and field team saw one of its own make history on Saturday at the Lone Star Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships. Freshman William Opare delivered a stunning performance in the men’s 400-meter dash, crossing the finish line in 45.95 seconds to set a new national record for Ghana.
Competing at the ABQ Convention Center, Opare turned in a race that combined speed and control.
His time of 45.95 seconds not only earned him first place and ten points for his team but also took down a record that had stood for nearly a decade.
He broke the previous Ghana Indoor 400m mark of 46.21 seconds, set by Emmanuel Dasor back in 2016.

The new time is an improvement, cutting 0.26 seconds off the former record. At the college level, running a sub-46 second time indoors is a major achievement and marks a key moment in Opare’s young career. His performance showed strong speed down the stretch and a calm approach under pressure.
Opare led a strong showing from Angelo State in the event. Teammates Rami Balti and Jahleel Armstrong also scored points for the Rams, finishing second and fourth with times of 46.55 and 47.22 seconds respectively.
However, it was Opare’s night to remember, as he put his name in the record books.
With this race, the Ghanaian has made a major statement early in his indoor season. His record-breaking run highlights his growth as an athlete and signals even bigger things to come as he continues his career.
