André-Frank Zambo Anguissa has announced his retirement from international football with Cameroon, bringing to a close a nine-year association with the Indomitable Lions that began under Hugo Broos in March 2017.
The Napoli midfielder, 30, confirmed the decision in a personal statement addressed to the Cameroonian football federation, his former coaches and teammates.
Over the course of his international career, Zambo Anguissa made 67 appearances for Cameroon and scored five goals, establishing himself as one of the team’s most influential midfield figures.
He represented the Indomitable Lions at three editions of the Africa Cup of Nations and was part of the Cameroonian squad at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
At AFCON 2023, with regular captain Vincent Aboubakar unavailable, Zambo Anguissa was entrusted with the armband, underlining the leadership role he had come to occupy within the national setup.

In his farewell message, Zambo Anguissa reflected on what representing his country had meant to him, describing a departure marked by considerable emotion and pride.
He was careful to single out the federation, his coaches and teammates, and above all the Cameroonian public, for their support throughout his time in the national team.
The midfielder’s exit leaves a considerable void in Cameroon’s engine room. Since breaking into the side under Broos, he had grown into a fixture of the national team’s midfield, prized for his physical presence, technical composure and game-reading ability at club level with Marseille, Fulham and, since 2022, Napoli.
His retirement from international duty comes as Cameroon looks ahead to a new World Cup qualification cycle, with the national federation yet to name a successor to fill the role he leaves behind.
Zambo Anguissa’s international career will be remembered not only for its statistical record but for the steadiness he brought to a Cameroon midfield that leaned heavily on his experience through some of the country’s most significant recent tournaments. He remains active at club level with Napoli in Serie A.
