CHAN 2024: Two Giants, One Ticket as Morocco and DR Congo Set to Battle For a Slot in the Quarters
Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi will host a clash of giants on Sunday, 17 August 2025, as Morocco and DR Congo—two of the most decorated nations in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) history, battle for survival in the group stage.
Both sides have twice lifted the trophy, a record that underlines the pedigree of this fixture. Yet, for all their history, only one can leave Nairobi with their quarter-final hopes intact.
For Morocco, the path is relatively clear. A draw will be enough to secure progression, though head coach Tarek Sektioui has made it clear that his side will not settle for anything less than victory.
“This is a very crucial match for us… Our ambition is to go as far as possible in this competition, and winning against the DRC would be great for us,” Sektioui said.
Defender Mohamed Moufid added that courage and sacrifice will be vital.
“It is not an easy match but one we must play with heart. DR Congo are strong and we cannot face them lightly.”
For DR Congo, the margin of error is far slimmer. Only a win will do. Their head coach Otis Ngoma admitted the stakes are enormous but backed his players to rise to the challenge.
“These are two former champions meeting with a quarter-final ticket on the line. We know what’s at stake and we continue to learn and improve with every game.”
With Kenya meeting Zambia simultaneously, the permutations could yet shift, but the Leopards cannot afford to glance elsewhere. Their destiny hinges on overcoming Morocco.
As the teams prepare to walk out at Nyayo, this fixture is more than just a group-stage contest. It is a test of tradition, resilience, and ambition — the kind of showdown that defines CHAN tournaments.
