Dr. Philip Oti-Mensah, Chief Executive Officer of Universal Merchant Bank (UMB), was named Man of the Match after captaining the UMB S.P.E.E.D STARS to a commanding 6-2 win over a team of former Black Stars players in an exhibition fixture that doubled as the public face of the bank’s newly announced football sponsorship.
UMB has taken over as Headline Sponsor of the Ghana Division One League with the sponsorship deal running for three years, succeeding a previous bank sponsor
Speaking after the match, Dr. Oti-Mensah explained the thinking behind UMB’s decision to step into the headline sponsorship role, a position previously held by another bank.
He said the commitment was about more than brand visibility, describing it as a deliberate move to raise the profile and standard of the Division One League.

Beyond the boardroom decision, Dr. Oti-Mensah also made his mark on the field. Playing a side featuring several former Black Stars internationals, his performance earned him the match’s MVP award.
Asked about turning out against seasoned professionals, he credited a lifelong love of the game rather than any ambition for a football career of his own.

The CEO also reflected on the experience of sharing the pitch with former national team players, describing it as a proud and emotional moment.
He noted that returning footballers do not always receive the recognition they deserve, which made the reunion with the Black Stars veterans all the more meaningful.

With the three-year Headline Sponsorship now in place, UMB has signalled its intention to play a sustained role in the growth of the Division One League, positioning the bank’s involvement as part of a broader commitment to Ghana football at both the grassroots and professional levels.
