The Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has issued a strong call to address a growing crisis in Ghanaian sports. He stated that a severe lack of funding is crippling national sporting activities and making competitions like the Ghana Premier League increasingly unattractive.
In a recent address, the MP painted a worrying picture. He explained that the necessary resources to support and develop sports in the country are simply not reaching where they are needed most.
“It is clear that in our country, as we speak, when it comes to resources that are supposed to be used to fund our sporting activities, we have a huge challenge,” Assafuah said.
He pointed directly to the state of the country’s top football league as a prime example. “Let me bring to your mind even the Ghana Premier League; as we speak, it is one of the most unattractive sporting activities even in Africa,” he noted. He directly linked this decline to financial problems, stating, “The growing unattractiveness is because of a lack of funding.”
According to the MP, the absence of reliable funding kills the energy and excitement that should surround the league. “Funding that is supposed to be available to be able to boost morale in terms of the Ghana Premier League is unavailable,” he explained.
To tackle this issue, Hon. Assafuah is lauded the passage of the Sports Fund. He believes this is an urgent necessity to provide a stable financial foundation for sports. He argued that such a fund would help improve the quality of leagues, support athletes, and restore Ghana’s sporting reputation.
“It is on that basis that we believe that we need to pass this Sports Fund urgently,” he concluded, emphasizing that immediate action is required to stop the decline and build a brighter future for Ghanaian sports.
