Ghana’s former WBO Africa super middleweight champion, Emmanuel Martey, was unsuccessful in his bid to secure a continental title in a second weight division on. He fell to South Africa’s Asemahle Wellem by unanimous decision in a light heavyweight bout scored decisively for the South African.

The fight, held at the Viwanja vya Posta, in Tanzania saw Wellem claim the vacant World Boxing Organization (WBO) Africa light heavyweight championship. The official judges’ scorecards revealed a clear, one-sided verdict in the eyes of the officials.

Notably, two judges from Ghana scored the contest 99-91 in favour of Wellem. A third judge had it 98-92. All three scorecards pointed to a commanding victory for the South African boxer.

With this win, Asemahle Wellem begins his reign as the new WBO Africa light heavyweight champion. For Emmanuel Martey, the quest to become a two-division African champion continues after a tough night where the judges saw his opponent as the dominant fighter.
