The President and Chief Executive Officer of the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) have arrived in Accra to sign a key hosting agreement with Ghana.
Mr. Hamad Kalkaba Malboum, CAA President, and CEO Mr. Lamine Fati were welcomed by the leadership of Ghana Athletics Association. The visit is for the official signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the CAA, Ghana Athletics, and the Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.
This agreement confirms that Ghana will host the 24th African Senior Athletics Championships. The event is scheduled for May 12 to 17, 2026, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Legon, Accra.
The President of Ghana Athletics, Mr. Bawah Fuseini, and its CEO, Mr. Ahmed Baffoe, led the reception for the CAA officials. The signing marks a major step in the plans for the championship.
Ghana’s hosting of this event is seen as a chance to show the country’s ability to organize international sports competitions. It also supports national goals to develop sports and help athletes excel across Africa.
The event is expected to bring top athletes from all over the continent to Accra. Preparations will involve close work between local organizers and the African athletics body to ensure a successful championship.
Alongside the athletics competition, Accra will also host a CAA Council meeting. Ghana’s Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, is expected to attend the opening of this meeting.
According to the planned schedule, CAA officials and technical staff will begin arriving on May 8, 2026. The athletes and teams will arrive on May 10, with the main competitions running from May 12 to 17.
The choice of dates considers the academic calendar of the University of Ghana. The university holidays will allow for the smooth use of the sports stadium.
The last edition of the African Senior Athletics Championships was held in Douala, Cameroon, in 2024. All parties are now working together to make the 2026 event in Accra a memorable celebration of African athletics.
