The President of the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA), Mr. Hamad Kalka Malboun, today paid a formal visit to the President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC). The meeting was held in preparation for the 24th African Senior Athletics Championships, which Ghana is set to host in May.
Mr. Malboun was joined by a delegation of CAA officials. They expressed strong confidence in Ghana’s ability to organize an excellent championship. The event is scheduled to take place in Accra from May 12 to 17, 2026.
During the talks, the CAA President noted Ghana’s successful hosting of the 13th African Games. He said he believes the quality facilities from those Games remain in good condition and will serve the upcoming athletics event well.

The GOC President, Lawyer Richard Akpokavie, warmly received the delegation. He stressed his ongoing concern for athlete welfare, particularly regarding their facilities and salary. He stated he is very hopeful that the Ghana Athletics Association will deliver another top-level event.

Mr. Bawa Fuseini, President of Ghana Athletics and Deputy Secretary General of the GOC, gave assurances that Ghana will deliver on its promises. He also expressed hope that all participating nations will bring their best athletes to ensure a highly competitive championship.

Adding his voice, the Secretary General of the GOC, Lawyer Mohammed Muniru, assured the CAA team of a successful event. He highlighted the widespread love for track and field in Ghana as a key ingredient for success.
Following the productive meeting, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Ghana and the CAA was later signed at the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, cementing the partnership for the upcoming championship.
