The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) has launched a comprehensive four-year plan aimed at transforming sports development in the country.
The 2025-2029 Strategic Plan was unveiled at a gathering of sports leaders, federation representatives, and stakeholders at the Four Point Hotel in Accra.

The plan outlines a clear vision to strengthen all areas of Ghanaian sports. GOC President, Mr. Richard Akpokavie Esq., stated that the strategy was built on six main pillars designed to create a more supportive and successful environment for athletes and sports bodies.

“We are not just dreaming of medals; we are building a system,” said Mr. Akpokavie. “This plan provides a clear framework to ensure every athlete has the tools to succeed and every federation can grow.”

The key focus areas of the plan are:
Athlete-Centered Support: Making athletes the top priority by providing them with the right resources.
Building Skills: Improving the knowledge of sports administrators, coaches, and officials.
Women in Sports: Actively promoting and supporting the participation of women at all levels.
Good Governance: Encouraging honest, transparent, and inclusive leadership within sports organizations.
Securing Funding: Finding new and reliable ways to fund sports programs and development.
Strong Partnerships: Building cooperative relationships with both local and international partners.

Dr. Fred Awaah, Chairman of the National Sports Authority Board, praised the GOC for its detailed and methodical approach. He highlighted that sports should be seen as more than just entertainment.

“Many people do not see sports as an area that contributes to national development, creates jobs, and improves the economy,” Dr. Awaah said. He urged all sports federations to follow the GOC’s example by creating their own detailed plans, which is essential for accessing national sports funds.

The GOC also expressed its gratitude to Mr. Christopher Essilifie, President of Modern Pentathlon Ghana. Mr. Essilifie led the team that wrote the strategic plan free of charge, a professional service valued at over $100,000.

The launch of this Strategic Plan marks a step towards a more structured and promising future for Ghanaian sports, with the goal of establishing the nation as a leading sporting force.
