The National Sports Authority (NSA) is preparing for recruitment exercise that will tackle over 450 staff vacancies across the country. This major boost for the Authority is expected to begin once it receives the necessary financial clearance from the Ministry of Finance.

The NSA, established under the Sports Act, 934 of 2016, is Ghana’s leading body for sports development and promotion. Its duties include overseeing national sporting facilities, ensuring they are well managed, and providing technical support to various sports associations and federations, in line with government policy.

The move to address staffing shortages comes after recent discussions in the media regarding the emergency recruitment of 17 personnel. Following these discussions, the Minister of Sports directed the individuals to re-apply. This will allow the Public Services Commission to formalize their employment, ensuring they receive better conditions of service.

The staff shortage at the NSA affects many key areas. There is a particular need for technical field officers, including coaches, grassroots sports development officers, and researchers. Other departments that are understaffed include the estates, security, IT, and marketing units.

Despite these challenges, the NSA has seen positive developments. One area of notable success has been the Operations Unit. Even without a governing Board for much of 2025, this unit has been instrumental in speeding up and facilitating many of the Authority’s activities.

Under the leadership of the current Director General, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, the NSA has recorded several achievements over the past year.

These include the recovery of several misappropriated and undocumented assets belonging to the Authority.

The NSA’s leadership says it has brought a renewed energy and a clear, practical approach focused on getting results. This has helped to improve the Authority’s image, recover infrastructure, and foster positive relationships with sports federations.

It has also led to greater efficiency in generating revenue for the IGF (Internally Generated Fund), stronger corporate partnerships, enhanced international diplomatic cooperation, and better coordination of national events. The planned recruitment drive is expected to build on this momentum by bringing in the skilled personnel needed to support the continued growth of sports in Ghana.
