Andrey Santos Begins Man United Journey After £50m Switch From Chelsea

Manchester United have completed the signing of Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos from Chelsea in a deal that could rise to £50 million with add-ons, as the club continues to strengthen its squad ahead of the new season.

The 22-year-old has signed a long-term contract at Old Trafford until June 2031, with United retaining the option to extend the agreement by another year. The move was officially confirmed on Monday, with the club stating that the transfer remains subject to registration.

Santos arrives after an impressive rise in European football, having developed into one of Brazil’s most promising midfield talents. His move represents a significant investment by United in a player they believe can become a key figure for years to come.

The Brazilian midfielder spent last season at Chelsea, where he made 43 appearances and produced standout statistics among young Premier League midfielders. He recorded the highest pass-completion rate and the most progressive passes per 90 minutes among midfielders under the age of 22 in the league. He also scored 3 goals during his time at Chelsea.

Brazilian Excited by Carrick Partnership

Santos expressed his excitement after completing the transfer, describing Manchester United as a club with a unique history and global appeal.

“Everything about Manchester United is special; it is an incredible feeling to join a club that some of my biggest idols have represented.”

The midfielder is also looking forward to working with United head coach Michael Carrick, whose own decorated playing career was built around controlling games from midfield. “As a midfielder, I am really excited to have the opportunity to learn from Michael Carrick,” Santos added, describing him as the ideal coach to help him continue his development.

Before his integration in the Chelsea first team, Santos gained valuable experience during a loan spell at Strasbourg, where he played a leading role and was trusted with the captaincy on several occasions. He scored 11 goals and provided five assists during his time in France.

The Brazilian also lifted the FIFA Club World Cup with Chelsea in 2025 and has represented Brazil at Under-23 level, further enhancing his reputation as a player with both ability and leadership qualities.

United director of football Jason Wilcox praised the midfielder’s all-round qualities, describing him as a player capable of influencing matches at both ends of the pitch.

“Andrey is an outstanding midfielder with excellent technical qualities and the ability to impact the game at both ends of the pitch.”

The club believes Santos still has significant room for improvement despite already gaining experience at the highest level. His arrival early in pre-season gives him the opportunity to adapt quickly and compete for a place in Carrick’s squad.

With his technical ability, passing range and attacking instincts, Santos is expected to add creativity and energy to United’s midfield as the club looks to compete for major honours in the coming campaign.
