In a move aimed at fostering a stronger working relationship, the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, paid a working visit to the office of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) at the Olympic House in Accra.
Breaking with usual protocol, the Minister chose to meet the GOC board at their own headquarters. The gesture was seen as a sign of respect for the independence of the Olympic movement and a desire to build a partnership based on mutual understanding.

The GOC board, led by its President, Richard Akpokavie, welcomed the government delegation, marking what many see as the start of a new era of cooperation in Ghanaian sports.
During the meeting, Minister Adams addressed the board, describing the GOC as a key driver of Ghana’s quest for international success. The discussion served as an official briefing on upcoming international competitions, with a special focus on preparing top athletes for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
A key point of agreement was the need to move away from “last-minute preparation.” Both sides committed to a new approach based on long-term planning and scientific training for all sports.
The high point of the visit came when the GOC board officially announced its backing for the newly created Ghana Sports Fund. The board members showed their commitment in a practical way by donating Ghc40,000 to the sports fund.

President Richard Akpokavie explained that this act was meant to lead by example. He stated that if the leaders of sports in Ghana are willing to invest their own resources, it sends a strong message to the private sector about the fund’s importance.
Mr. Akpokavie described the Sports Fund as the “financial engine” the country needs to reduce its heavy dependence on the national budget for sports development.
He noted that for too long, “lesser-known” sports have struggled for support. He expressed hope that this fund would bring about a fairer distribution of resources, creating new chances for every athlete.
The donation, he said, was a seed intended to grow into a forest of opportunities.
Minister Adams was deeply impressed by the board’s gesture, praising them for their “leadership by example.” He reassured those present that the fund would be managed with the highest transparency and accountability.

He promised that every contribution would go directly to key areas such as infrastructure, athlete welfare, and finding young talent at the grassroots level.
The Minister explained that this visit was part of a larger plan to ensure the government stays closely in touch with the real needs of the various sports federations.
