The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) Athletics Team put up an impressive performance at the 2026 Cape Coast Open Championship, securing a total of 23 medals. The event took place on Saturday, 14 March 2026, in the Central Region.

The team took part in all 18 events and came out on top in many of them. Their final tally included 10 gold medals, 7 silver medals, and 6 bronze medals. The competition was organised by the Ghana Athletics Association (GAA) as a way to find new talent for the upcoming Youth Games in Oregon, USA, and the African Athletics Games.

Captain Joseph Issahaku, the Officer Commanding (OC) the Physical Training School, praised the team for their efforts.

He said the team had raised the standard of military athletics and brought great honour to the GAF through their excellent conduct and achievements at the championship.

The Chief Coach, Warrant Officer Class One (WOI) Moro Salifu, also had high praise for the athletes. He put the team’s strong performance down to a combination of hard training, discipline, and the steady support from the Military High Command.

Two athletes were singled out for their outstanding performances in their events: Lance Corporal Diafo Solomon and Leading Aircraftman Shaibu Marizuk.

The team also boasts a national record holder, Private Mamoud Baba Seidu, who holds the record in the 400m hurdles with an impressive time of 49.45 seconds. By the end of the event, seven GAF athletes had qualified to join the Ghana National Athletic team.

The championship also saw participation from other organisations, including the Ghana Immigration Service, the Ghana National Fire Service, the Prisons Service, as well as athletes from various universities and second-cycle schools.
