Accra Hearts of Oak are preparing for an international challenge as the Intercontinental Club Masters get set to face English side Sunderland in a friendly match at the Stadium of Light in England.
The fixture, which forms part of activities surrounding the Democracy Cup, represents more than just a football match. It is a symbolic convergence of sport and diplomacy, aimed at strengthening ties between Ghana and the United Kingdom through the universal language of football.
Hearts of Oak, one of Ghana’s most decorated clubs, will relish the opportunity to test their strength against Sunderland, a club steeped in English football tradition. The match is expected to offer valuable international exposure for the Phobians while also showcasing Ghanaian football talent on a global stage.
In the lead-up to the clash, a Ghanaian parliamentary delegation paid a courtesy visit to the Stadium of Light. The delegation was led by the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, and included the Member of Parliament for Akuapem South, Hon. Lawrencia Dziwornu, among other officials.

The visit underscored the broader importance of the fixture, highlighting the role of sports as a tool for diplomacy and international cooperation. It also reflects growing institutional support for initiatives that promote Ghana’s image abroad through cultural and sporting exchanges.
Officials accompanying the delegation were given a tour of the stadium facilities and briefed on preparations ahead of the match.

The interaction further emphasized the collaborative spirit underpinning the Democracy Cup initiative.

For Hearts of Oak, the encounter presents a unique opportunity to measure themselves against European opposition while fostering international partnerships.
For Sunderland, it offers a chance to engage with a passionate African fan base and contribute to a meaningful cross-cultural exchange.
The fixture is expected to draw attention from football enthusiasts in both Ghana and the United Kingdom, reinforcing the enduring connection between the two nations through sport.
The Democracy Cup continues to evolve as a platform that not only celebrates football excellence but also promotes unity, dialogue, and mutual respect between countries.
The friendly promises to be an exciting test for Hearts of Oak as they look to measure themselves against competitive international opposition while promoting Ghanaian football abroad.

The Democracy Cup was established by the Speaker as a platform to bridge the gap between Parliament and citizens through sports while celebrating Ghana’s democratic journey.
Since its inception, the tournament has produced two champions, with Ghana Premier League giants Asante Kotoko S.C. and Accra Hearts of Oak S.C. emerging as winners.
As part of efforts to broaden the impact of the competition and expose players and administrators to international best practices, the Democracy Cup, organised by Primeval Consult and sponsored by KGL Group offers the winning club the opportunity to visit a partner club abroad.
Following their victory in the maiden edition, Asante Kotoko travelled to Washington in the United States.
With the newly established partnership with Sunderland, 2026 winners of the Democracy Cup will have the opportunity to visit the United Kingdom.
