Rampant Celtic Thrash Slovan Bratislava in Champions League Opener

Celtic delivered a thrilling performance to overpower Slovan Bratislava in their Champions League opener, securing their first victory in the group stage’s opening match in emphatic style at a jubilant Celtic Park.

Brendan Rodgers’ side, backed by a raucous home crowd, showcased a dominant display to earn a 5-1 victory, setting the perfect tone for their European campaign.

On a rare occasion where Celtic entered the game as favourites in Europe’s premier competition, they rose to the challenge with energy, precision, and poise.

The breakthrough came in the 17th minute when Liam Scales powered home a header from Arne Engels’ corner, sending the Celtic faithful into a frenzy. The Scottish champions continued to press relentlessly, creating multiple chances before the break but failing to add to their tally.

The nerves surrounding their wastefulness in front of goal were quickly eased just two minutes into the second half. Kyogo Furuhashi expertly diverted Nicolas Kuhn’s fierce cross into the net, doubling Celtic’s lead and settling any lingering doubts. From that point on, Celtic took full control, with opportunities flowing freely.

Arne Engels, one of Celtic’s standout performers, extended the lead from the penalty spot after Alistair Johnston was fouled by Slovan’s Danylo Ihnatenko. Engels calmly slotted the penalty home, making it 3-0 and pushing Celtic out of reach.

Though Slovan Bratislava briefly halted the Celtic party with a stunning strike from Kevin Wimmer, who curled a shot into the net with the outside of his left foot, the response from the home side was swift. Reo Hatate’s pinpoint pass found Daizen Maeda, who restored Celtic’s three-goal cushion with a composed finish.

The victory was sealed in the closing stages when substitute James Forrest threaded a perfect ball through to fellow substitute Adam Idah, who slotted home to make it 5-1. It was a fitting finale to a commanding and morale-boosting night for Celtic.

Brendan Rodgers will be delighted with his side’s attacking flair and ruthless finishing, as Celtic made a bold statement in their quest to progress through the group stages of the Champions League. The home crowd left Celtic Park in high spirits, their team having produced a performance brimming with confidence and quality.
