Bernardo Silva rallies Man City fans at Wembley

Bernardo Silva to Leave Manchester City After Nine Years

Bernardo Silva will bring the curtain down on a remarkable era at Manchester City, with the club officially confirming the Portuguese playmaker will depart at the end of the current season.

The 31-year-old, who arrived in Manchester in 2017, leaves behind a legacy defined by consistency, intelligence, and relentless work ethic.

Over nine seasons, Silva has made 451 appearances, cementing his place as one of the club’s most influential figures during what is widely regarded as the most successful period in City’s history.

In a statement announcing his departure, the club acknowledged his “immense contribution”, describing it as “ incalculable” and highlighting his role in delivering sustained dominance across domestic and European competitions.

Silva’s trophy cabinet reflects that dominance. He has won nineteen major honours, including six Premier League titles, a UEFA Champions League crown, two FA Cups, five Carabao Cups, three Community Shields, as well as a FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup.

His influence extended beyond silverware. With 76 goals and 77 assists, Silva consistently delivered in key moments, blending creativity with tactical discipline under manager Pep Guardiola.

His versatility allowed him to operate across multiple roles, often setting the tempo in City’s midfield while also contributing in attack.

Silva also etched his name into the club’s history books by breaking into the top 10 all-time appearance makers, surpassing notable figures such as David Silva, Paul Power and Willie Donachie.

It is an affirmation to both his durability and importance over nearly a decade at the Etihad.

His final season is not without stakes. City remain firmly in contention for both the Premier League title and the FA Cup, giving Silva the opportunity to add further silverware before his departure.

The midfielder recently captained the side to Carabao Cup glory in 2026 against The Arsenal Football Club, underlining his leadership credentials in his closing chapter at the club.

A Heartfelt Goodbye

Silva also confirmed the news personally via Instagram, delivering an emotional farewell to supporters, teammates, and the city he now calls home.

“ When I arrived 9 years ago, I was following a dream of a little boy, wanting to succeed in life, wanting to achieve great things. This city and this club gave me much more than that, much more than I ever hoped for.”

Reflecting on the historic achievements during his time at City, Silva added that “ What we won and achieved together is a legacy that will forever be cherished in my heart. The Centurions, the domestic quadruple, the Treble, the four in a row and much more… It wasn’t that bad .”

The City captain also emphasized the personal milestones he experienced in Manchester, describing it as the place “ where I started my marriage and my family .” He extended gratitude to his loved ones. “ From the bottom of my heart, Ines and Carlota, thank you.”

Addressing the fans directly, Silva acknowledged their unwavering support throughout his journey.

“Your unconditional support throughout the years is something that I will never forget. My main goal as a player was to always play with passion so you guys could feel proud and well represented on the pitch.”

In a line that is likely to resonate deeply with supporters, he concluded “I arrived as a Man City player, I leave as one more of you, a Man City supporter for life.”

End of an Era

Silva also paid tribute to Guardiola, the coaching staff, and his teammates, highlighting the bond built over nearly a decade.

“The atmosphere we created every day in the training ground made me feel at home and a part of a big family”.

The club has confirmed that plans are underway to give Silva a fitting farewell at the end of the campaign, ensuring that one of its modern greats receives the send-off his service deserves.

As Manchester City look toward the future, Silva’s departure marks more than just the exit of a player. It signals the gradual transition of a team that has defined an era of English football dominance.

Replacing his intelligence, versatility, and leadership will not be straightforward.

For now, however, the focus remains on ending the season on a high. With trophies still within reach, Silva has the chance to close his Manchester City chapter in the same manner it has largely been written with silverware.
