The Central Planning Committee for the 2026 edition of the Tour du Ghana has been inaugurated with a mandate to coordinate preparations for what is expected to be a major international cycling event.
The committee was inaugurated on Thursday, September 3, 2026, at the Conference Room of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC).
Former Member of Parliament for South Tongu and Chairperson of the Government Relations and Stakeholders Sub-committee of the Ghana Olympic Committee, Hon. Kobla Mensah Woyome, has been appointed Chairman of the Central Planning Committee.
The committee brings together key stakeholders from the Ghana Cycling Federation (GCF), Ghana Olympic Committee, Ministry of Sports and Recreation, National Sports Authority, Security Agencies, Health Institutions, Tourism Authorities, Sponsors and other relevant institutions.
The Ghana Cycling Federation, which owns the Tour du Ghana, will work closely with the various stakeholders to ensure the successful organisation of the event.
Speaking after his appointment, Hon. Woyome expressed appreciation for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to work with all stakeholders to deliver a successful Tour du Ghana 2026.

He noted that cycling has the potential to contribute significantly to Ghana’s international image, tourism and investment prospects, stressing the need for stakeholders to work together to maximise the benefits of the event.

Hon. Woyome also called on members of the committee and its various sub-committees to approach the assignment with urgency, discipline and a strong sense of national responsibility.
He further appealed to corporate Ghana and potential sponsors to come on board, emphasising the significant visibility and brand exposure the Tour du Ghana will provide as the race traverses several regions of the country.
According to the Ghana Cycling Federation, the 2026 Tour du Ghana is scheduled for November 9–23, with an expanded programme compared to last year’s edition.
The event will feature 15 teams, 90 riders and 45 team officials, with 11 competitive stages covering a competition distance of 1,406.4 kilometres.
The total official travel distance is projected at 995.3 kilometres, bringing the grand distance to 2,401.7 kilometres over 14 nights.
The competitive programme will begin with a prologue in Accra from James Town to Osu Castle before the race moves north and subsequently returns through several parts of the country.
The stages are scheduled as follows:
– Prologue: Accra – James Town to Osu Castle
– Stage 1: Tamale Criterium
– Stage 2: Tamale to Kintampo
– Stage 3: Kintampo to Sunyani
– Stage 4: Sunyani to Kumasi
– Stage 5: Kumasi Criterium
– Stage 6: Kumasi to Nkawkaw
– Stage 7: Koforidua Circuit
– Stage 8: Ada Foah to Aflao
– Stage 9: Keta to Ho
– Stage 10: Ho to Akwamufie
– Stage 11: Accra Criterium
The race is also expected to attract international participation, with teams from Europe, the United States, the United Kingdom, Africa and Ghana expected to compete.
The Secretary-General of the Ghana Cycling Federation, Shaaban Mohammed, disclosed that the Federation is targeting 15 teams for this year’s competition, compared with 12 teams targeted last year.

He said the number of riders is also expected to increase from 58 in the previous edition to 90 this year.
He further announced the participation of the Police Cycling Team, while discussions have also led to the formation of a Prudential Life Insurance cycling team.
President of the Ghana Olympic Committee, Richard Akpokavie, said the GOC’s support for the Tour du Ghana is rooted in the belief that a successful event will contribute to the development of cycling and encourage more young people to take up the sport.

He said the long-term ambition is to secure international calendar status for the Tour du Ghana and position it as a major global cycling event comparable to established tours such as the Tour de France and Tour d’Italia.
The 2026 edition is therefore being positioned as an important step towards achieving that objective.
The Central Planning Committee has been tasked with providing overall leadership for the planning and execution of the event, developing a comprehensive implementation framework, coordinating stakeholders, ensuring compliance with national and international cycling standards, and facilitating the participation of international teams and officials.
It will also oversee financial, logistical, protocol, security, transport and safety arrangements while promoting the Tour du Ghana as a platform for tourism and investment promotion.
The Central Planning Committee includes representatives from the Ghana Cycling Federation, Ghana Olympic Committee, Africa Cycling Network Satellite, Ministry of Sports and Recreation, National Sports Authority, Ghana Police Service, Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana National Fire Service, National Ambulance Service, National Road Safety Authority, Ghana Tourism Authority, Ghana Revenue Authority, the National Recreation and Wellness Programme, media and other stakeholders.
The committee is expected to ensure effective coordination across the various regions and institutions involved in the tour.
The Ghana Cycling Federation also disclosed plans to introduce community rides at various destinations along the route. The initiative is expected to promote cycling, create opportunities for talent identification and increase public awareness about the sport.
A cycling caravan will also form part of the event, providing participating companies and sponsors with opportunities to promote their products and brands along the route.
With the Central Planning Committee now inaugurated, preparations are expected to intensify ahead of the Tour du Ghana 2026, as organisers seek to deliver a professionally managed event that promotes cycling while showcasing Ghana’s tourism, culture, investment opportunities and hospitality to an international audience.
The committee has pledged to work collectively with the Ghana Olympic Committee, Ghana Cycling Federation, government institutions, sponsors and other stakeholders to deliver a successful and memorable Tour du Ghana 2026.
