CAF Postpones 2024 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship to August 2025
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced the rescheduling of the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN), originally set to take place in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda in 2024. The tournament is now slated for August 2025 to allow for the completion of critical infrastructure upgrades.
In a statement, CAF highlighted the significant progress made in the three host nations, particularly in the construction and refurbishment of stadiums, training facilities, hotels, hospitals, and other essential infrastructure required for the tournament.
However, CAF’s Technical and Infrastructure experts have advised that more time is necessary to meet the organization’s standards for a successful CHAN.
CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe expressed his appreciation for the efforts of the leadership in the host countries. “I would like to express my deep gratitude to President William Ruto of Kenya, President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania, and President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda for their leadership and commitment,” he said.
“The progress in building and upgrading football infrastructure has been impressive, and I am confident that by August 2025, the facilities will meet CAF’s high standards,” Motsepe added.
The draw for the tournament will proceed as planned, taking place in Nairobi on January 15, 2025, at 8:00 PM East African Time. CAF has assured stakeholders that the new timeline will enhance preparations, ensuring a world-class tournament for players, fans, and officials alike.
The exact commencement date in August 2025 will be announced in due course. The TotalEnergies CHAN is a biennial competition featuring players who ply their trade in domestic leagues across Africa, making it a significant showcase of local talent and football development on the continent.
CAF remains committed to delivering an exceptional tournament that highlights the best of African football and showcases the region’s growth in sports infrastructure and organization.
