Young Apostles Captain Ramzy Abubakar Wants Wenchi Sports Arena to Become Fortress

Young Apostles captain Ramzy Abubakar wants the Wenchi Sports Arena to become a place where visiting teams struggle to leave with points as the club builds on a strong home record in the Ghana Premier League.

The 1-0 victory over Basake Holy Stars in their first home game of the 2026/27 season extended Young Apostles’ winning streak at the venue to seven matches.

That run is a continuation of the strength they showed at home last season, when their performances in Wenchi played an important role in their fight to remain in the top flight.

Young Apostles won 11 of their 17 home league matches last season, drawing four and losing only twice. Their two defeats came against eventual champions Medeama and Asante Kotoko.

The numbers underline the importance of home advantage to the club, but Abubakar believes the players must do more than rely on past results.

They want to make protecting their home ground part of their identity, he told The BAC Sports in an exclusive interview.

“If you’ve been following Young Apostles, you know that coming to Wenchi, it’s either you come and play draw but you can’t come and take three points,” Abubakar said.

“The best you can do is to play draw.”

That confidence comes from a home record that has continued into the new campaign. After losing 3-0 to Vision FC on the opening weekend of the new season, Young Apostles returned to Wenchi and immediately responded with a victory over Basake Holy Stars.

For the captain, the response showed the value of playing in familiar surroundings after the disappointment of their opening fixture.

A record they want to protect

Abubakar says the players are conscious of the reputation they are building around their home ground and are prepared to work to maintain it.

“Most of the teams have really prepared. They’ve really prepared and they know when coming to Wenchi, you don’t get it easy,” he said.

Young Apostles are now unbeaten in their last seven home matches and have won all seven, giving them a strong recent record to build on.

Abubakar is not, however, treating that run as a guarantee of future success. His message is centred on continued effort and the responsibility of the players to make sure opponents do not find an easy route to points in Wenchi.

“We, the players, we’ve really been working hard and we’ve assured all our supporters to beat any team that comes here,” he said.

That approach is tied to a broader desire to avoid another difficult survival campaign.

Young Apostles only secured their Premier League status after a demanding season last term, and the experience has influenced the targets the players have set for the new campaign.

Abubakar says the squad wants to collect as many points as possible during the first round so they can avoid being dragged into another late fight for survival.

“We need to start it with power. So, we can accumulate the maximum points within this first round,” he said.

“So, that in the second round, it will be less work, we’ll work just small so that we will not suffer like what we went through last season.”

Home strength feeding bigger ambitions

The objectives are now higher than simply staying in the Premier League.

Abubakar says the players are targeting a top-seven finish and a place in the FA Cup semi-finals, while continental football is also an ambition should the opportunity arise.

For the captain, competing in Africa would provide another opportunity for the players to grow and add value to their careers.

“As players, we are always ready. So, yeah, we will be able to compete,” he said.

“Because as a player, playing in Africa, if we are able to work at it, it will bring a lot of value to the players.”

The immediate task is to keep collecting points, and the Wenchi Sports Arena could again be central to that objective.

With 11 home wins last season and seven consecutive victories at the venue, Young Apostles have already shown that they can turn home advantage into results.

Abubakar now wants that pattern to become a defining feature of the club, with the Wenchi Sports Arena serving as the platform from which Young Apostles can pursue ambitions beyond another battle for survival.
