Somalia Celebrates Referee Artan Despite World Cup Heartbreak

Somalia’s football community turned disappointment into celebration on Tuesday as referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan returned to Mogadishu to a rousing reception after being denied entry into the United States ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Large crowds gathered at Aden Adde International Airport to welcome the respected official, who had been on course to become the first Somali referee in history to officiate at football’s biggest tournament before his journey was abruptly cut short.

Artan travelled to Miami as part of FIFA’s preparations for referees selected for potential World Cup appointments. The programme was a mandatory requirement for officials hoping to take charge of matches during the competition in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

However, the Somali referee was refused entry by US immigration authorities shortly after arriving in Miami. Despite reportedly carrying the necessary travel documents connected to his FIFA duties, he was immediately returned to Somalia.

The development effectively ended Artan’s chances of participating in the World Cup. Attendance at the training camp was compulsory, leaving FIFA unable to consider him for appointments later in the tournament.

The United States currently maintains travel restrictions affecting citizens of several countries, including Somalia. Those restrictions ultimately prevented Artan from entering the country and completing the required preparations for the global event.

FIFA later confirmed that the official would not be involved in the tournament, explaining that the governing body has no authority over the immigration laws, visa policies or border control procedures of host nations.

Although his World Cup dream came to an unexpected end, Artan remains one of Africa’s most highly regarded referees. His performances have earned widespread recognition across the continent and established him among the elite officials in African football.

The Somali was crowned Africa’s Referee of the Year at the CAF Awards and has overseen numerous major fixtures. He was selected for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco and recently handled the second leg of the CAF Champions League final between AS FAR Rabat and Mamelodi Sundowns.

While Artan will not make history at the World Cup this year, the scenes that greeted him in Mogadishu showed how highly he is valued at home.

For many Somalis, his achievements have already broken barriers, and the warm welcome reflected a nation’s pride in one of its most accomplished sporting ambassadors.
