Morocco secured a place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating the Netherlands 3-2 in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw in regulation and extra time.
The Atlas Lions produced a composed and dominant performance, overcoming the European side in the shootout to continue their impressive World Cup campaign.
Head coach Mohamed Ouahbi hailed his team’s display, insisting the victory was fully deserved.
It is a fully deserved victory in every sense of the word. I think we completely controlled the match. I don’t think they are used to playing with only 30% possession, while we reached 70%. We created far more chances and had many more shots,” Ouahbi said after the match.
The Moroccan coach also revealed a remarkable pre-match prediction involving defender Issa Diop, who scored a crucial goal during the contest.
I dreamed that Issa Diop was going to score an important goal… but I didn’t know it was going to be today. I told him after the match. He deserves it so much,” Ouahbi added.
Midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi described the encounter as one of the most significant moments of his career and expressed confidence in Morocco’s ambitions for the remainder of the tournament.
In terms of emotions and pressure, this is one of the biggest matches of my career. We hope to reach the final and win this World Cup. Why not?” he said.
The victory also saw Morocco continue to rewrite African football history. The Atlas Lions became the first African country to win knockout matches at two different FIFA World Cups, having previously achieved the feat during their historic run to the semi-finals in 2022.
Morocco now account for three of Africa’s six all-time FIFA World Cup knockout victories, with Ghana, Senegal and Cameroon each recording one.
In addition, Morocco joined Ghana and Nigeria as the only African countries to qualify for the Round of 16 in consecutive FIFA World Cup tournaments, further cementing their status as one of the continent’s most consistent performers on football’s biggest stage.
