United States forward Folarin Balogun has reportedly taken legal action in an extraordinary bid to overturn the consequences of his controversial red card during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

According to a court document circulating online, Balogun has filed an application for a temporary injunction against FIFA in the District Court of King County, Washington, seeking permission to feature for the United States in their Round of 16 clash against Belgium despite his suspension.

Balogun was sent off during the USA’s round of 32 encounter against Bosnia and Herzegovina following a challenge that was deemed serious foul play after a VAR review. The dismissal ruled him out of the round of 16, prompting the unprecedented legal move.

The document states that Balogun would suffer “probable, imminent and irreparable injury” if he is prevented from playing, arguing that missing the match would deny him the opportunity to contribute to the national team and continue building on his impressive tournament, in which he had already scored three goals.

In a notable passage, the filing also questions whether “stepping on an opponent’s foot while playing the ball constitutes serious foul play,” suggesting the player’s legal team is challenging the interpretation of the incident that led to the red card.

The document further claims that the striker would lose access to the elite coaching and team environment, and invaluable experience that comes with participating in a World Cup round of 16 game.

If genuine, the case would represent one of the most unusual legal challenges in FIFA World Cup history, as players rarely seek judicial intervention over disciplinary decisions made during the tournament.
