Black Bombers head coach Ofori Asare has said he had no hand in selecting the boxing squad that represented Ghana at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, saying his involvement with the team began only after the final selection had already been made.
I wasn’t involved in selecting the final team. I only came in to train the boxers once the selection had been made,”
The coach also disclosed that the team faced significant equipment shortages throughout the tournament, describing a situation in which boxers were forced to share basic kit in order to compete.
“We didn’t receive kits during the tournament. At one point, three boxers had to share a single pair of boxing shorts, and we even borrowed training gear from the centre just to prepare.”- Ofori Asare, Black Bombers Coach
Asare’s remarks add a logistical dimension to the broader conversation around the Black Bombers’ Glasgow 2026 campaign. The coach had earlier spoken about the team’s relative inexperience and the need to retain athletes for future tournaments, while Ghana Boxing Federation president Dauda Fuseini has separately called on the National Sports Authority to support a youth succession pipeline ahead of the 2027 African Games and Los Angeles 2028 qualifiers.
Taken together, the comments point to preparation and resourcing challenges that stretched from squad selection through to competition-day logistics, even as individual boxers, including bronze medallist Amadu Mohammed, delivered notable results on the biggest stage.
