Ghana Rugby has taken another step in its expansion drive, hosting an introductory rugby session for members of the Ghana National Fire Service as part of a growing effort to bring the sport to new institutions across the country.
The session was led by Ghana Rugby President, Ms. Rafatu Inusah, who was joined by Women’s Representative Anita, Coach Jeffery, and national team players Khadijah and Percy.
Their involvement affirms the federation’s continued push to widen participation in the sport and build fresh pathways into the game for non-traditional rugby communities.
The initiative is tied directly to preparations for the forthcoming SESSA Games later this year, a competition in which the Ghana National Fire Service is expected to field a team.
The introductory session, along with the training that has followed, is designed to give participants a working foundation in rugby’s rules, techniques, and match demands ahead of the tournament.
Members of the Fire Service have shown genuine interest in embracing the sport, with follow-up training already under way to build their understanding, skills, and confidence on the field.
Since the initial introduction, training sessions have continued at the Fire Service Training School in Jamestown, where instructors have worked to deepen participants’ grasp of the game’s fundamentals. The response from the Service has been described as encouraging, with a number of personnel keen to take their involvement further.
Ghana Rugby and the Ghana National Fire Service are now working together to identify a core group of participants who will proceed to structured, ongoing training. The aim is to ensure consistent development for those selected, rather than a one-off exposure to the sport, as the Service builds toward its SESSA Games campaign.
The programme marks another achievement in Ghana Rugby’s broader commitment to taking the sport into new communities and institutions, using it as a vehicle to promote teamwork, discipline, and personal development well beyond the field of play.
