A delegation of seventy athletes and officials, representing the future of Ghana sports, have departed today, Tuesday, December 9, for Luanda, Angola, to compete in the 2025 Africa Youth Games.

The team, comprising of the country’s most promising young athletes aged between fourteen and seventeen, is set to compete against top youth talent from across the continent from December 10 to 20. The athletes are drawn from fifteen sporting disciplines, signaling Ghana’s comprehensive approach to the games on the African continent.

The mission was officially announced as a coordinated national effort between the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC).

Under the leadership of Chef de Mission Kamal Sulley, Team Ghana will compete in a wide array of sports, including Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Boxing, Canoeing, Cycling, Fencing, Golf, Judo, Karate, Swimming, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis, and Weightlifting. This broad participation underscores Ghana’s objective to maximize its presence and medal prospects at the Games.

Organized by the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), the Africa Youth Games represent a critical platform for emerging athletes. The event promotes Olympic values and serves as a vital preparatory stage for future major international competitions, including the Youth Olympic Games.

As the team embarks on this journey, the Ghana Olympic Committee calls upon all Ghanaians to rally behind these young Athletes .

The nation’s support will be pivotal as they strive for excellence and aim to raise the flag of Ghana high on the continental stage in Angola.

More than 30 countries have confirmed participation in the continental youth sports fiesta, marking the largest entry in the event’s history.

From the 14 nations that featured in the maiden edition in Morocco in 2010, to 24 in Botswana in 2014, and 25 in Algeria in 2018, the 2025 edition in Angola has surpassed expectations with several countries making their debut.

Among the countries listed for the 2025 AYG are: Algeria, Burundi, Benin Republic, Botswana, Chad, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Djibouti, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Liberia, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and host nation Angola.

The African Youth Games is a major multi-sport competition for athletes aged 14–17.
