Ghana’s contingent at the World Athletics U-20 Championships, Oregon 2026, produced a mixed outcome on the track on Thursday, with sprinter Godfred Opoku delivering a commanding performance in the men’s 400m while Aishatu Jaffar’s campaign in the women’s event came to an early close.
Opoku announced himself as one of the meet’s standout performers in the men’s 400m Round 1, winning Heat 1 in a time of 46.05 seconds to secure automatic qualification for the semi-final round. The victory places him among the fastest qualifiers from the opening round and signals a strong medal prospect for Ghana as the championships progress.
In the women’s 400m, Aishatu Jaffar competed in Heat 4, finishing seventh in a time of 56.39 seconds. The result was not sufficient to advance her to the semi-final stage, bringing her participation in the event to a close at the first round.
The Athletics team will now turn its attention to Opoku’s semi-final assignment, with hopes that his heat-winning form can carry through to a place in the final.
