Greater Accra Shines at Korean Ambassador’s Cup as GTF Unveils Development Plans
Greater Accra emerged as the dominant force at the 16th Korean Ambassador’s Cup Taekwondo Championship, claiming the Best Regional Team award after an impressive showing across kyorugi and poomsae at the Borteyman Sports Complex in Accra.
The championship attracted athletes, coaches, referees and officials from across Ghana, with competitions spanning the 10–11 years, cadet and junior categories.
Setorme Tornyevah, Mina Afeohoko, Eric Agorku, Ismael Halid and Yoofi Aggrey-Fynn were among the Greater Accra athletes who secured gold medals in their respective categories.
Other regions, including Western, Volta, Upper East, Central and Eastern, also produced podium finishers.
Nine individual awards were presented to the championship’s standout performers. Gaddiel Cromwell of the Eastern Region and Setorme Tornyevah of Greater Accra were named the best male and female athletes respectively in the 10–11 years kyorugi category.
Issah Zulkif and Ramatu Salifu were recognised as the best male and female cadet kyorugi athletes, while Ismael Halid and Afua Otoo took the corresponding junior honours.
In poomsae, Yoofi Aggrey-Fynn and Sitta Tornyevah were named the best male and female performers.
Korean Embassy Reaffirms Support for Ghana Taekwondo
The tournament also provided a platform for the Korean Embassy to reaffirm its commitment to the long-term development of Taekwondo in Ghana.
Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Ghana, H.E. Kyongsig Park, said he was impressed by the skill and determination of the young athletes, as well as the respect and sportsmanship they displayed throughout the competition.
“I was truly impressed by the skill, energy, and determination of our young athletes. More importantly, I was pleased to see the respect and sportsmanship they showed toward one another.”
Ambassador Park congratulated Ghana Taekwondo Federation (GTF) President Frederick Lartey Otu on his re-election and said Korea would continue working with the Federation to create more opportunities for Ghanaian athletes.
He announced that uniforms, belts and other equipment donated by members of the Korean community in Macao would soon be presented to the GTF, with additional equipment from Korea’s Taekwondo Promotion Foundation expected later in the year.
President Otu, whose administration took office after the GTF Elective Congress on July 18, 2026, outlined plans to make the Federation more inclusive, professionally managed and internationally competitive.
The new administration has established a Technical Committee chaired by Technical Director Simon Gluikpor, with Fayise Selorm, Bernard Ampim Darko, Sabastian Atatina Benon and Percy Konadu Yiadom serving as members.
The Federation will also launch a Regional Taekwondo Awareness Campaign in the Ashanti Region in September, targeting schools and communities with limited sporting opportunities.
The campaign will initially cover the Northern, Upper West, Bono, Central and Ashanti regions as the GTF seeks to identify young talent and create a development pathway from schools and communities through clubs and regional structures to the national team and international competition.
“There are talented young boys and girls in deprived communities across Ghana who simply need an opportunity, proper coaching and the right support. Our responsibility as a Federation is to find them,” Otu said.
