Historic Venues Set for UCL Final Hosting Duties in 2028 and 2029
UEFA has handed two of European football’s most iconic stadiums the responsibility of hosting the Champions League final in 2028 and 2029.
The Munich Football Arena (Allianz Arena ) will stage the 2028 final, while Barcelona’s Camp Nou has been selected to host the 2029 showpiece, UEFA confirmed following its Executive Committee meeting in Thessaloniki, Greece.
Munich will host the competition’s showpiece only three years after staging the 2025 final, where Paris Saint-Germain demolished Inter Milan 5-0 to win their first Champions League title.
The stadium also holds a special place in Chelsea’s history. In 2012, the London club defeated Bayern Munich on penalties after a 1-1 draw to win its first European crown.
Camp Nou’s selection carries even greater historical significance. The Barcelona stadium will host the Champions League final for the first time since 1999, when Manchester United produced one of the competition’s greatest comebacks.
Trailing Bayern Munich 1-0, United scored twice in stoppage time through Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to win 2-1 and secure their second European Cup under Sir Alex Ferguson.
UEFA also confirmed hosts for several other major finals. Parc Olympique Lyonnais will stage the 2028 Women’s Champions League final, with Cardiff’s National Stadium of Wales hosting in 2029.
The 2028 Europa League final will be played at Bucharest’s National Arena, while the 2029 final will take place at the National Stadium Serbia in Belgrade. Juventus Stadium and Puskás Aréna will host the 2028 and 2029 Conference League finals respectively.
UEFA has also approved adjustments to the 2026/27 Nations League promotion and relegation system as part of preparations for a major format change.
The governing body said the changes will allow for a “smooth transition” to the new concept approved in May 2026, under which the Nations League will move from four leagues to three from the 2028/29 edition.
UEFA’s next Executive Committee meeting is scheduled for December 7 in Belfast, Northern Ireland, one day after the EURO 2028 qualifying draw in the city.
