Jordan Ayew Secures Sheffield United Move Ahead of Ghana’s AFCON Qualifiers
Ghana captain Jordan Ayew has joined Sheffield United on a one-year contract, securing a return to competitive football as he prepares for the Black Stars’ 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
The 34-year-old forward was a free agent after leaving Leicester City at the end of last season but will now link up with Chris Wilder’s squad at Bramall Lane.
Ayew’s move comes at a crucial time, with Ghana set to begin their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign later this month against Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia. Regular club football should provide the experienced forward with an opportunity to regain his competitive rhythm and remain in shape for the national team.
The Ghana captain was last involved at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, starting all four matches as the Black Stars reached the knockout stage. He also featured in Ghana’s 0-0 draw against England.
Wilder welcomed Ayew to Sheffield United and believes his experience at the highest level will be valuable to the squad.
“I spoke last week about being close to getting someone in from the free agent market and things did move quite quickly so I am really pleased to have Jordan with us,” Wilder said.
“We’re talking about someone here with bags of experience from right at the top level of the game. Only a few months ago he was captaining Ghana in the World Cup, so he’s someone with real pedigree.”
The Sheffield United manager also highlighted Ayew’s versatility, noting that his ability to play across the front positions gives the team additional attacking options.
Ayew, meanwhile, expressed his excitement about the move and revealed that Wilder’s approach came as a surprise after the manager contacted him while he was in Ghana.
“It happened really, really quick because I was in Ghana and the manager called me last week,” Ayew said.
“I didn’t think twice, I just took the opportunity, and the most important thing is for me to help the team and obviously for us to have a great season.”
The Ghana captain also stressed his determination to make an immediate impact.
“I have a lot of desire this season to make an impact and to help the team because we have a good squad and there’s a lot of positive things we can do,” he added.
Ayew has more than 500 competitive appearances to his name, having represented Marseille, Sochaux, Lorient, Aston Villa, Swansea City, Crystal Palace and Leicester City.
His return to England gives him a fresh opportunity to establish himself at club level while ensuring he enters Ghana’s upcoming AFCON qualifiers with valuable competitive minutes under his belt.
