Sensational Selecção das Quinas Win First U-17 World Cup
Portugal’s under-17 national team delivered a sensational campaign at the 2025 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar, culminating in the country lifting the title for the very first time.
The Selecção das Quinas secured a historic triumph after overcoming fellow Europeans Austria in the final, edging them by a lone goal.
The moment of history arrived in the 32nd minute when Benfica’s Anísio Cabral struck the only goal of the match, taking his tally to seven for the tournament. Although the goal was not enough to surpass Austria’s Johannes Moser’s eight in the Golden Boot race, Cabral’s decisive finish was all Portugal needed to claim their maiden FIFA U-17 World Cup crown.
Portugal were ruthless throughout the competition, netting 13 goals in the group stages, including emphatic 6-1 and 6-0 victories over New Caledonia and Morocco respectively, before falling 2-1 to Japan in their final group match.
The Selecção das Quinas regrouped and powered through the knockout stages, eliminating Belgium, Mexico, and Switzerland, before edging Brazil on penalties in a dramatic semi-final. That victory set the stage for a historic final in which they dispatched Austria to seal the ultimate prize.
Elsewhere, Brazil narrowly defeated Italy 1-0 to win the bronze medal at this year’s edition.
Portugal’s triumph marks a new chapter in their youth football legacy, adding the U-17 title to their growing list of international achievements.
