Botswana’s Kemorera Tisang won gold in the men’s 400m hurdles at the African Senior Athletics Championships on Thursday, finishing in an impressive 48.66 seconds.
Competing from Lane 6 at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Accra, Tisang set a strong early pace and maintained his lead with excellent hurdling and a powerful finish, proving too strong for the rest of the field.
It was a celebrated evening for the blue-and-white of Botswana. Victor Ntweng, also of Botswana, stormed home in third place on the clock but was officially classified third overall. However, his time of 49.21 seconds was enough to earn him a podium place and contributed to a powerful national display.
South Africa’s Wenich van Rensburg claimed silver in the men’s 400m hurdles with a strong time of 49.35 seconds from Lane 3. He finished strongly in the second half of the race and pushed hard for gold, but Botswana’s Kemorera Tisang had already built a lead that could not be caught.
Morocco’s El Meldhi Dimokrati finished fourth in 50.29 seconds from Lane 8, rounding off a competitive top four and confirming North Africa’s continued presence in the hurdles discipline. The top four were all separated by barely 1.6 seconds, reflecting the competitive depth on display at the Accra 2026 championships.
Ghana had its own story to follow. Seidu Mammoudou, put in a spirited effort from Lane 4 to finish fifth in 51.29 seconds.
Burkina Faso’s Z.B. Ali Berte and Kenya’s Ngunjiri Edwar Wadaki crossed the line in a dead heat, both recording 51.49 seconds to share sixth place, an outcome that illustrated just how closely contested the lower half of the final was. Kenya’s Kipkorir Rotich, racing from Lane 5 completed the field in eighth position with a time of 1:08.56, having faced difficulties in the closing stages of the race.
