Champions League 2026/27 Season
Africa’s footballing footprint on European club competition’s biggest night has never looked more emphatic.
As the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League gets under way, players representing eighteen African countries are lining up for some of the European biggest clubs, offering fresh proof that the pipeline from African academies to Europe’s elite leagues continues to widen every season.
At the head of the pack sits Morocco, whose eleven representatives make it the most heavily featured African country in this year’s competition. It is a reflection of a golden generation shaped by the country’s 2022 World Cup semi-final run, several of whom have gone on to anchor defences, midfields and attacks at clubs across Spain, France, Germany and beyond.
Senegal follows close behind with ten players named in Champions League squads, continuing a run of sustained representation built on the backs of Sadio Mané’s generation and now carried forward by a new wave of talent turning out for sides in France, Germany and Belgium.
Nigeria rounds out the European places with nine players, headlined by a Galatasaray forward line spearheaded by Victor Osimhen, whose move to Turkey has kept him among Europe’s most closely watched African strikers.

1 Morocco 11
2 Senegal 10
3 Nigeria 9
4 Ivory Coast 8
5 Algeria 6
6 Cameroon 5
7 Mali 4
8 Ghana 3
Ivory Coast’s eight representatives underline the depth of a country that has become one of Europe’s most reliable exporters of top-flight talent, while Algeria’s six and Cameroon’s five reflect two footballing powerhouses whose influence on the continent’s game long predates this season’s tally.
Mali’s four players and Ghana’s three complete the group of countries with multiple representatives among Europe’s giants, with the Black Stars’ trio a reminder that Ghanaian talent, though fewer in number this term, continues to find a home on Europe biggest stage.
Two Representatives Apiece
A further five countries have two players each carrying their countries’ hopes into this season’s competition:
1 Angola
1 DR Congo
1 Guinea
1 Gabon
1 Gambia
One Representative Each
Rounding out the African picture, nine further countries have a single player flying their flag in this season’s Champions League, a reminder that even a solitary representative can carry outsized significance for a footballing country watching from home.
1 Mauritania
1 Egypt
1 Guinea-Bissau
1 Rwanda
1 Libya
1 Tunisia
1 Burkina Faso
1 Mozambique
1 Cape Verde
Taken together, the numbers paint a picture of a continent whose reach into European football stretches far beyond its traditional heavyweights.
